Youth and experience vie for glory at Queensland Open

Published Wed 25 Oct 2023

Some of Australia’s leading players will fight it out this week at the Logan City Queensland Open at Daisy Hill Squash & Racquet Club in Brisbane.

The event which brings together players from eight different countries is one of the last stops on the 2023 Australian Squash Tour and is also a PSA Challenger Tour 6 tournament.

Australia’s top ranked women - Jess Turnbull and Sarah Cardwell - take the top two seedings for women’s draw. The pair first played a PSA event against each other in 2010, and while Cardwell dominated their early encounters, Turnbull has had the edge in recent years.

The draw also includes Madison Lyon, Sarbani Maitra (pictured) and Emmy Lamb who were named in the Junior Trans Tasman Test Team last week, along with Junior World Championships representative Shona Coxsedge.

In the men’s draw, Queensland-born Japanese player Tomotaka Endo is top seed for the tournament he won back in 2018.

Men’s World Teams Championships representatives Rhys Dowling and Dylan Molinaro are in the top five seeds for the tournament along with World Cup representative Nick Calvert and Malaysia’s Ong Sai Hung who made the quarter-finals of this year’s Costa North Coast Open Coffs Harbour.

Play begins on Wednesday at 3:15pm AEST.
