WJC Team Event - Australia storm into quarter-finals

Published Wed 26 Jul 2023

The pool stage has been completed in the Women’s Team event at the 2023 WSF World Junior Squash Championships in Melbourne with Australia performing a dramatic comeback to earn a place in the quarter-finals.

Having gone down 3-0 to Malaysia in their opening tie, the equation for the hosts was simple - beat New Zealand and earn a spot in the last eight.

Anne Leakey was able to get New Zealand off to the best possible start with a 3-0 victory over Hannah Slyth placing the Kiwis in the driver's seat and Australia under a mountain of pressure on the co-captains who were still to play.

Erin Classen was able to put the importance of her match aside and quickly opened up a 2-0 lead over Sophie Hodges. The New Zealander's fighting spirit came to the fore as she won the third game 16-14 and threatened to make a comeback.

However the West Australian was able to reset and charge to victory, dropping just three more points as she squared up the tie at 1-1.

The results pitted Madison Lyon and Ella Lash in a head-to-head battle, the winner set to send their country into the last eight.

It was the Queenslander who started the rubber off on the front foot by taking the opening game, however the Kiwi was able to even it up in the second.

Lyon was not to be denied, however, reeling of two points to every one of her opponents' in the next two games to win 3-1 and earn Australia a place in the quarter-finals much to the delight of the home fans.

Australia face a tough ask tomorrow, taking on hot favourites Egypt in their quarter-final.

The other last-eight encounters will see Hong Kong play England, USA take on India and Canada facing Malaysia.

All quarter-final matches can be seen LIVE on WorldSquash.TV with play starting at 2pm.
