WJC Team Event - Australia fall to favourites

Published Fri 28 Jul 2023

Australia faced the toughest task in squash on Thursday when they took on global powerhouse Egypt in the quarter-finals of the women’s team event of the 2023 WSF World Junior Squash Championships in Melbourne.

Following a stunning come-from-behind victory over New Zealand on Wednesday, the hosts knew they would have their work cut out for them against a side which included the top two seeds from the women’s individual event.

Madison Lyon was first to take to the court, up against back-to-back world junior champion Amina Orfi.

The world No.43 proved too strong for the Queenslander, taking the match 3-0 (11-3, 11-4, 11-6).

Next on court was Amelie Guziak who had the opportunity to take on Zeina Kareem Zein El-Din. The Egyptian was the 5/8 seed in the individual event and it took eventual champion Orfi to stop her run in the quarter-finals.

The Victorian was valiant in her efforts but could not hold back Zein El-Din who took a 3-0 (11-5, 11-6, 11-3) victory and an unassailable 2-0 lead for Egypt.

In the final dead rubber, Hannah Slyth was pitted in a rematch of her individual second round encounter with Fayrouz Abouelkheir. The best-of-three games match went to Egypt 2-0 (11-2, 11-2) delivering a 3-0 quarter-final victory.

Egypt will now meet England in the semi-finals after they defeated Hong Kong 2-1. In the other quarter-finals, USA defeated India 2-1 and Malaysia beat Canada 2-0.

In the 5th-8th bracket, Australia now meet Hong Kong while India face Canada.

All top 12 matches can be seen LIVE on WorldSquash.TV with play starting at 2pm on Friday.

Thursday’s highlights will be available at around 10:30am AEST on Friday on 7plus.
