WJC Day 3 Wrap - Mixed fortunes for Australian team

Published Thu 20 Jul 2023

While no Australians are left in the main draw of the 2023 WSF Junior World Squash Championships there was still plenty to play for on day three of competition at Melbourne Sports Centres.

The dozen Australians in action today split their matches with six wins and six losses, leaving eight players still in action on Friday.

Oscar Curtis can still finish as high as 17th following a three-game victory over Canada’s Jacob Lin in the 17th/32nd draw.

In the Women’s Special Plate, Madison Lyon remains alive courtesy of a 3-0 win over Scotland’s Natalie Main in the Round of 32. Shona Coxsedge and and Hannah Slyth were not as fortunate, both going down to Canadian Opponents.

Dylan Classen has advanced to the 33rd/48th bracket after a solid victory today. His clash against New Zealand’s Apa Fatialofa drew one of the biggest crowds on the back courts with the Kiwi contingent in full-voice throughout the encounter.

The West Australian was eventually able to outlast his Trans Tasman opponent 3-1 (11-7, 11-4, 8-11, 12-10) to move through.

Erin Classen and Amelie Guziak both bowed out in the Women’s Plate Round of 16 today, however Courtney Scholtz collected her first victory of the week with a 3-0 win over Chinese Taipei’s Yu-Chen Cheng in the Consolation Plate Round of 16.

Victorians Harvey Allan and Connor Hayes will finish inside the top 72 of the men’s tournament following their 3-0 victories today, however Ken Lamb and Thomas Scott were defeated by their opponents in the 65th/80th draw.

Day four action begins on Thursday at 11am AEST with the Glass Court, Court 6 and Court 9 being live streamed via WorldSquash.TV.

Highlights from Day Three will be available from around 10:30am AEST on Thursday morning on 7plus.
