WJC Day 2 Preview - Aussie pair take centre stage
Published Wed 19 Jul 2023
Local hopes Oscar Curtis and Madison Lyon will be front and centre when the 2023 WSF World Junior Squash Championships enter their second day at Melbourne Sports Centres on Tuesday.
The pair return to the glass court where they both claimed their Australian Junior Open titles in April in the round of 32.
Lyon and Curtis are looking to advance on their previous best performances at the tournament having both reached the third round in France last year as well.
Curtis is up against 5/8 seed Joachim Chuah from Malaysia, a round of 16 player from 2022. The pair have known each other for the better part of a decade with their showdown one of the more anticipated match-ups of the day.
Chuah received a bye through the first round before downing Japan’s Kanta Ito 3-0 yesterday. Curtis dropped just one point in his opening match on day one against Macau’s Keng In Leong before defeating Ireland’s Jack O’Flynn in three games to book his place in the third round.
Following Curtis on the glass court is Queenslander Madison Lyon who was forced to fight hard in a 3-2 victory late on day one against Malaysia’s Anrie Goh Chu Yu. She now comes up against 9/16 seed Nadien Elhammamy from Egypt.
Most of the other players on the Australian Team will play matches today in the classification rounds.
Day three action begins on Wednesday at 11am AEST with the Glass Court, Court 6 and Court 9 being live streamed via WorldSquash.TV.
Highlights from Day One will be available on Wednesday morning on 7plus.
