It’s been a great weekend for Australian Squash with great results on the PSA Challenger Tour and the opening event of the 2023 Australian Squash Tour.

2023 Auckland/Oceania Open (PSA Challenger Tour 5)
Joseph White has taken out just his second PSA Challenger Tour event, with victory in the final of the Auckland/Oceania Open.

It was the second PSA title for the 25-year-old following his win at the 2021 Howick Open.

Entering the tournament as the third seed, White received a bye in the first round and dropped just one game en-route to a semi final clash with number one seed Lwamba Chileshe.

After a fast start start, White was on his heels in the third game but recovered to beat the tournament favourite 3-1.

That set up the final against Lwamba’s younger brother Temwa, and White was again out of the blocks quickly for a 2-0 lead. The number two seed hit back in the third, however White was able to regain the ascendency to win the fourth game and claim the title.

In the women’s draw, top seeded Alex Haydon dropped just 28 points on her way to final showdown with Lana Harrison.

Haydon opened up a 2-0 lead before the Kiwi hit back, even saving a match ball in the fourth game to set up a grandstand finish.

In the end if was th local who triumphed 14-12 in the fifth with Haydon finishing as runner up.

2023 South Australian Open (PSA Satellite / Australian Squash Tour)
Two-time Australian Junior Open champion Madison Lyon continued her good form with victory at the South Australian Open at The ARC, Campbelltown.

After dropping the opening game of the final to top seed Sarah Cardwell, Lyon conceded just 15 more points to claim the title in 35 minutes.

In the men’s draw, Mike Corren defended his title after dropping one game throughout the tournament. Corren defeated James Lloyd in the final after the Queensland earned his way to the final courtesy of a 65 minute marathon against Jack Hudson.

Lyon and Corren now sit atop the Australian Squash Tour standings, with the second event of the Tour taking place later this week when Mirrabooka Squash Club hosts the 2023 WA Open.
