Jess Turnbull and Donna Lobban have bowed out of the women's singles overnight at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Taking to court 1, Turnbull had a shaky start to her encounter with England's Lucy Turmel.

The English player managed to open the match will an 11-1 before Turnbull found her groove, pushing Turmel in the second. While game two (13-11) still went the way of Turmal, it gave Turnbull an insight into what she needed to do to overcome the world No.28.

Coming out for the third game, the Australian pushed Turmel to her limits, the relentless pressure and hard-hitting forced the English women to make a handful of mistakes. Reaching 9-9, Turnbull took it up a gear, hitting two consecutive points to secure a win and possible fightback.

Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be as Turmel came out determined to close the match, reaching 8-0 before Turnbull got a point on the board. Turmel would go on to secure her spot in the quarterfinal against world No.5 Joelle King of New Zealand with a 3-1 win.

In the last women's Round of 16 matches, Lobban took on world no.19 Emily Whitlock of Wales.

It was a tight start to the match, as the Australian went out to a 6-4 lead before Whitlock was able to draw it back at 7-7. From there, the Welsh player was in control of the match and took game one 13-11.

With momentum on her side, Whitlock continued her prowess in the second, winning 11-7 before blasting to an unassailable lead in the third at 11-3 which would see her book a quarter-finals spot.

Australia will now turn its attention to the doubles competition which will get underway on 3 August with the mixed event. Men's and women's doubles get underway on Thursday (4 August).

The squash competition is being played at the University of Birmingham Squash Centre, with the action live and free on 7plus.
