Sydney ready to host 2022 Oceania Junior Championships

Published Mon 04 Jul 2022

The 2022 Oceania Junior Championships will be heading to Sydney’s Thornleigh Squash Centre from 17-19 December.

The event is recognised on the Australian Junior Squash Tour (AJST) as a platinum event and will see juniors from the 10 island nations of Oceania to compete across boys and girls U11 to U19 age groups.

Originally scheduled to be held in New Zealand in April, international boarders closures prevented the event from going ahead.

Working with Oceania Squash Federation and Squash NZ, Australia put up its hand to host this year's event with New Zealand to host the event in 2023.

It will mark the first Oceania Junior Championships since 2019 with the pandemic cancelling the 2020 events while the 2021 event was postponed to April 2022.

Squash Australia National Lead - Competitions and Events Tamika Hunt said hosting the Oceania Junior Championships will be a great chance to bring the region together again.

“It’s the first time since 2019 that an Oceania Junior Championships has been hosted so we're looking forward to seeing players from across the region come together in Sydney for the event,” he said.

“The Australian juniors will be working hard for more success at the Oceania Junior Championships and we look forward to the Trans Tasman series.

“We would like to thank Thornleigh Squash Centre for hosting. It will be a great opportunity to showcase and enjoy their newly upgraded facility.”

Last month Thornleigh finished upgrades to their centre after receiving a $960,000 grant from the NSW Government through the Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund.

The centre now boasts a modern gym facility with a 70m indoor running track along with a state-of-the-art lift for greater accessibility, office accommodation and refurbished bathrooms.

Following the conclusion of the Oceania Junior Championships, the Trans-Tasman Test Series will commence on 20-21 December.

Australia has won 15 Oceania Junior Championship titles since the inaugural event with the likes of Oscar Curtis (U15 Boys) and Alex Haydon (U19 Girls) coming away with titles at the 2019 edition.
