Success against Switzerland secures 11th-place

Australia narrowly missed a spot in the top ten of the WSF Women’s World Team Championships, despite coming back from one down to beat Switzerland and secure the win in the third and last match of the 9th-12th place round robin.

Alex Haydon was defeated by Ambre Allinckx in the first match of the night, but not without putting up a fight. The Aussie came back from 0-2 to force a decider and lost only 9-11 in the fifth game. Donna Lobban was next on the court, comfortably overcoming Cindy Merlo to tie the contest at one all.

It was once again up to Jess Turnbull to play the decider, with the Australian national champion overcoming the resistance of Nadia Pfister and taking the win for the team in green and gold in four games, including a tight 15-13 last game.

At the end of the round robin the Aussies were even on points with South Africa and Japan, with all three teams recording two wins and one loss, but were edged out of the top ten on a countback. Australia finished in 11th place, with South Africa in 9th and Japan in 10th.

“That was disappointing,” confessed National Coach Stewart Boswell, as he summarised the Australian team’s experience in Egypt.

“I thought the final two matches, where we beat South Africa and Switzerland, were our best performances of the week. It was nice to finish with a win, although we just missed the top ten.

“There’s nothing quite like playing for Australia at a World Team Championships. Being part of the event and competing against the best players in the world, as a team, was something Donna, Jess, Sarah and Alex all relished,” Boswell said.

The tournament final will be contested by top seeds Egypt and USA after victories over Malaysia and England in the semi-finals at the Madinaty Club.
