Squash program comes to a close at the Pan Pacific Masters Games

Published Fri 11 Nov 2022

The squash events at the 2022 Pan Pacific Masters Games came to a close yesterday, after three intense days of competition at the Gold Coast's Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium.

Sunday's program featured some highly fought matches from the Finals day of the individual event. One of the most closely contested saw local favourite David White take out Simon Slade from Christchurch, NZL, in five exciting games (12-10, 11-7, 7-11, 3-11, 11-8) on his way to claim the Men's under 55 title. Third place in the same category went to Matt Howard.

The Men's 70+ category offered another epic last match, with Graeme Richards from New Zealand facing Coffs Harbour's player Barry Ford. Ford got the upper hand in the first game, but Richards mounted a strong comeback that was too hard to resist, eventually winning in four hard games 3-1 (9-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-8)

Day 3 on Monday saw the start of the team event, with each team made up of two players. The format of the event had each team member play a singles match and then a doubles match against the members of the opponent teams.

After all the weekend’s action, many players had sore bodies from previous days, but this didn’t stop the enthusiasm for squash!

The battle between 1st and 2nd place was again a highly contested match, with doubles ending up being the decider. After splitting the singles 1-1, the couple of Ollie Bradley from the Gold Coast and partner Bruce Morgan from Canberra came out on top with a tight 3-0 doubles victory against Toha Reweti-August and Jake Markwart. Third place went to the 'ladies in pink', Heather Blair and Kay Giacomantonio, while 4th place went to local lady Kim Bradney and her partner Jane Mackie.
