Squash to light up the Gold Coast this summer

Published Fri 19 Nov 2021

Excitement is building as Squash Australia countdown to the first national event of 2022, the Australian Doubles Open.

Taking place on Queensland’s Gold Coast from 22-23 January, it will be one of three events to be held at Carrara Squash Centre over the upcoming summer.

The 2022 Gold Coast PSA Open will follow on just over a week later (28-30 January) with the 2022 Carrara Junior Open (30 January) held alongside the event. Lastly, the inaugural Oceania Doubles Championships (11-13 February) will see nations from across the region come together to compete, and is set to be a big test for all Commonwealth countries with Birmingham 2022 on the horizon.

The Australian Doubles Open marks an exciting milestone for Squash Australia after the past two years saw competitions decimated due to COVID-19 restrictions. It will present an opportunity for the Australian squash community to reunite after travel restrictions and lockdowns posed significant challenges throughout 2020 and 2021.

The two doubles events - 2022 Australian Doubles Open and Oceania Doubles Championships - will be looked at towards selection for the Australian Commonwealth Games team.

It will be an exciting summer of squash in Queensland, with City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate welcoming visitors back to the city’s sporting facilities.

“It’s fantastic that we have lured the Australian Doubles Open to our city. It’s even more exciting that the title will be decided on our world-class courts at the GC Sports and Leisure Centre,” Tate said.

“I urge every squash enthusiast to pack the stands as the best-of-the-best battle for national glory.”

Registrations are now open for the 2022 Australian Doubles Open, which will feature Open Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed divisions as well as Combined A, B, C, D grades.
