Squash Australia has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement today of a boost to high performance sports funding.
The Prime Minister has committed $283 million to elite athletes, coaches and support staff over the next two years in a historic show of support on the path to Brisbane 2032.
The announcement is good news for Australia’s leading players who are eyeing off Squash’s Olympic debut at LA 2028.
“Today’s announcement is a shot in the arm for all sports, but particularly Squash,” said Robert Donaghue, Squash Australia CEO. “Government funding has a direct impact on how athletes are able to commit to their sporting careers and and the support they receive on that journey.
“As a traditional stronghold of the sport, Australia has produced many of the best players the squash world has ever seen and increased levels of funding are required to take us back to the top.
“We look forward to receiving further clarity as to what the overall funding package means for squash specifically so we continue to deliver a system where our most talented players can thrive.”
The Albanese Government said the funding is in addition to $102.8 million in annual grant funding and brings the Government’s total high performance investment to $489m over two years.
ASC CEO Kieren Perkins OAM said today’s announcement was a sign of confidence in Australian sport.
“Thanks to the Australian Government, our Olympians and Paralympians will head to Paris with the backing of the biggest ever investment in high performance sport,” Mr Perkins said.
“Australian high performance sport is more united than ever before under our shared commitment to win well, and I’m proud this has been recognised through today’s announcement.
“I would like to thank the Australian Government for its commitment to sport and providing our athletes the platform to win well and inspire the next generation of more active Australians on the road to LA, Brisbane, and beyond.”
