Squash Australia opts into national safeguarding program

For more than 30 years, National Child Protection Week has aimed at helping the community understand that everyone has a role to play in keeping young people safe.

In line with this, Sport Integrity Australia has developed the Safeguarding in Sport Continuous Improvement Program (SISCIP), which provides sports with education, training and ongoing support so they can offer a safe and inclusive environment to all members, including children.

Squash Australia has committed to this important nationwide program which delivers a structured approach for ensuring children and members are protected from abuse and discrimination in sport.

SISCIP has been developed by Sport Integrity Australia with the support of the National Office for Child Safety and informed through consultations with national sporting organisations and national sporting organisations for people with disability, and state and territory departments of sport and recreation.

It is complementary to the National Integrity Framework and provides a nationally-consistent approach to child safeguarding and member protection across national, state and club level.

At its core, SISCIP aims to embed a culture of child safety and member protection across all levels of sport in Australia. The objectives are to:

  • Build the capacity and capability of Australian sporting organisations to keep children and members safe.
  • Lead a cultural shift that prioritises the safety of children and members, by empowering every level of sport.
  • Enhance organisational capability to respond to child abuse threats.
  • Bolster community confidence that sports are safe for children and members.
  • Enable sports to demonstrate their commitment to child safeguarding and member protection.
  • “Squash Australia is committed to ensuring our sport remains safe and inclusive for everyone in the community,” said Robert Donaghue, Squash Australia CEO.

“We will work with Sport Integrity Australia to audit our current practices and how they align to best practice for child safeguarding and member protection.

“From there an action plan will be developed specific for Squash and we will work hand-in-hand with Sport Integrity Australia on the implementation phase.

“From the national body through to states, clubs and centres, everyone has a role to play and as the name of the program suggests, we will continue to measure ourselves against the highest standards in this area once the program is in place.”
