Squash Australia has today taken the difficult decision to postpone the 2021 Tarra Volkswagen Australian Open, originally scheduled in Bega, NSW from 22-25 July.
The decision has been made in consideration of the current COVID-19 restrictions in place in Sydney and New South Wales, impacting travel as well as the delivery of large-scale community events, which cannot proceed as planned.
Squash Australia remains committed to ensuring the safety, health and well-being of all participants, organisers, volunteers and spectators is of absolute priority.
Squash Australia CEO, Robert Donaghue, said the decision to postpone the event was not taken lightly, but adopted with the safety of the squash community in mind and designed to give every athlete the best opportunity to take part in the Open.
“As we continue to live in a COVID-19 world, plans will evolve and change according to the situation and the current health advice. We thank the squash community for being patient and understanding while we navigate the uncertainty,” he said.
Bega Squash Club will remain the host of the prestigious event, with exact dates for the postponed competition to be considered in the next few weeks. An update on the revised program will be released following consultation with relevant stakeholders.
