Squash Australia is excited to announce the four players who’ve been selected for the 2022 World Games from 7-17 July in Birmingham, Alabama, United States.

The World Games is an international multi-sport event comprising sports and sporting disciplines that are not contested in the Olympic Games.

Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games debutants Rhys Dowling, Jess Turnbull and Alex Haydon have all been selected alongside the Northern Territory’s Joseph White.

For Dowling and Turnbull, it will be their second World Games appearance after Wroclaw, Poland in 2017 while White and Haydon are set to make their debuts.

It will also be White’s senior international debut after the 2021 Men’s Team World Championships were cancelled.

Turnbull is looking forward to going to Alabama to be part of the event.

“I’ve been to a World Games before, I had a really good time. The draw should be good so it will be nice preparation for the Commonwealth Games and I'm looking forward to getting some matches in against internationals and being overseas again,” she said.

Haydon, who has spent the last three months abroad playing on the PSA Challenger Tour, is hoping to take what she has learnt from her recent experiences into The World Games.

“It has definitely opened my eyes to the level of what squash is internationally and to prepare for major international tournaments going forward,” she said.

“It will be exciting to see what it is all about, playing against the top players and experience it all because I’m sure it will be different to the Commonwealth Games  in its own way.”

Some of the world’s best squash players are set to feature at the 2022 World Games including world no.15 Tinne Gilis, who will be Belgium’s sole representative while Germany’s Simon Rösner returns to defend his 2017 title.

Australia has competed at every edition of the World Games in squash since 1997 winning one gold and one silver medal. The last time they medalled at the event was in 2005 when Rachael Grinham took home silver - Sarah Fitz-Gerald won gold in 1997.

The University of Alabama Birmingham will play hosts to squash during the World Games between 7-17 July with singles events across the men’s and women’s.
