Siblings battle it out in the first doubles tournament of the Australian Junior Open

Published Sun 04 Apr 2021

This is the first doubles event that has happened in the Australian Junior Open and it offered up a ‘battle of the siblings’ in the Under 19 Mixed Doubles final.

Erin Classen and Dylan Classen took on Maggie Goodman and Sam Goodman. After successful results for the participants in the individual’s event, their match up looked to be a great battle on paper. However, the Classens were able to get out on top.

“The Classen’s came out convincingly and were able to take control and successfully bad the title of Under 19 Mixed Doubles Champions: 11-8, 11-2 (14 mins),” said Jenny Duncalf, Squash Australia Performance Pathway Coach.

The Under 19 Girls final was a close match seeing Queensland’s Sophie Fadaely and Shona Coxsedge take on Victoria’s Jana Hegazy and Courtney Scholtz. The team from Victoria came out strong in the first and appeared to have the match all wrapped up but the girls from Queensland were not about to let them run away with it and fought their way back to finish the match 9-11, 11-9, 11-5 (25 mins).

The Under 15 girls final saw Joanne Joseph and Hannah Slyth reverse their result from their pool match against Amelie Guziak and Emmy Lamb. The girls had a close first game but were able to take the lead in the second to win the title of Under 15 Girls Doubles Champions 11-9, 11-3.

Squash Australia wish to thank Russell Weatherburn from Squash ACT for being the on the ground support throughout the event and ensuring everything ran smoothly for the doubles. We would further like to thank the referee’s Mark Mason, Mike Palfreyman and Thomas Palfreyman for all of their efforts throughout the event.
