Semi-Final action delights local crowd in the Moreton Bay PSA Satellite

Published Sat 20 Mar 2021

Semi Finals action provided another day of quality action for local crowds at Moreton Bay PSA Satellite at Redcliffe PCYC.

The first semi-final saw the women take to the court with top seed Rachael Grinham taking on fifth seed Tamika Hunt. Hunt pushed ahead early in the match, scoring a 2-0 lead, but a strong fight back from Grinham saw her win the next 2-games to push the opening semi to a fifth set.

It seemed that Hunt had run out of steam during the fourth, but she managed to push through the fifth and claim her second consecutive victory over Grinham  11-7, 11-7, 8-11, 4-11, 11-6 (48 mins) to secure her place in tomorrow’s final with

“It was a great opening semi-final with Tamika finding that extra bit of intensity and accuracy in the deciding game to halt Rachael’s comeback”, National Coach, Stewart Boswell said.

The first semi-final for the men was between Redcliffe local Brad Freeme and top seed Nicholas Calvert, what turned into the longest match of the day. It was a battle of endurance as the two went head-to-head with Freeme taking out the first game in an enthralling display.

Freeme pushed hard in the following games to challenge Calvert and kept scores even in the fourth but in the end, the Redcliffe local ran out of stamina as Calvert took control of the court and scored victory 9-11, 11-2, 11-5, 11-9 (49 mins).

The second women’s semi-final between second seed Sarah Cardwell and third seed Jess Turnbull was a lob and drop game at times. Turnbull proved too strong for her higher seeded opponent and secured her spot in the final against Tamika Hunt tomorrow with a 12-10, 4-11, 11-4, 11-5 (38 mins) win.

The second men’s semi-final and final match of the day was between second seed Bryan Lim and fourth Solayman Nowrozi.

Lim sealed his place in tomorrow’s final against Calvert with 11-8, 11-7, 11-6 (35 mins) win. This will be a rematch of the Gold Coast PSA Satellite final in January.

“A well contested final match of the evening resulting in a 3/0 win for Bryan. Both players using some good variation and changes of pace with Bryan producing a number of good drops and attacks to the front corners to take the match in straight games,” Boswell said.

Men’s and Women’s finals kick off today at 2pm AEST.

2:20 pm - [5] Tamika Hunt v [3] Jess Turnbull

3:00 pm - [1] Nicholas Calvert v [2] Bryan Lim
