Sandgate Squash Centre is ready to host upcoming Club Championships

The Turnbull family has owned and operated the Sandgate Squash Centre since 2011, and they are proud that their current ongoing renovations will be on show when it hosts the Australian Club Championships in March.

Managed by Nathan Turnbull, the centre is host to five traditional hardback courts and one championship glass back court with seating for up to 80 people. This has given the club the opportunity to hold some major events and offer a wide range of programs.

“We have been able to host a couple of Queensland Opens, Queensland Junior Championships, a Queensland Schools Championship, as well as multiple women's PSA events," said Turnbull. "We offer a large range of programs at the club, from Junior Oz squash, social practice, interclub competitions, and private and group coaching."

Sandgate is also where Australia's top players including Jess Turnbull, Rhys Dowling, and Sarah Cardwell have trained to compete on the international PSA circuit.

Like many facilities around the country a lot of time and effort has been put into managing the court and upgrading various aspects of the court so that they can provide the best for their members.

"Currently, we have been working on bathroom renovations, which are still in the process of being completed," said Turnbull.“However, we recently received a Queensland government grant to upgrade our lighting and court flooring.”

With less than a month to go,  Sandgate is looking forward to hosting the Club Championships (4-5 March), an event which encourages clubs from around Australia to compete for the national title in Divisions 1 to 4 as well as an overall Champion Club.

"This event is the perfect way to showcase our centre and give our members an opportunity to play in a national competition at our own club, and of course to win the championships," said Turnbull.

"The excitement is definitely the potential to hopefully play 3 or 4 opponents that you have never played before.

“Variety of matches is something we don't usually get in house or interclub competition.”
