Reigning Champion Nick Calvert set to defend his title at Australian National Championships

Reigning men’s Australian Champion Nick Calvert (Queensland) is excited to travel to Sydney to defend his title at the 2021 City Tattersalls Australian National Championships (ANC) on 17 June.

The 21-year-old is currently studying Bachelor of Mathematics juggling university exams and competition preparation, but is looking forward to testing his skills against a range of high-calibre Australian players.

“My preparation has been going well. I’ve been doing a lot of on-court work and fine-tuning my skills in the past month. I now feel fit enough to play my best squash in every match,” Calvert said.

With athletes who have competed on the World Tour and at the Commonwealth Games participating in the ANC, Calvert won’t be taking any match lightly.

“The draw is full of exceptional players, but mentally I’ll be treating it just as any other tournament, to eliminate some of the pressure. I know that if I play my best squash I’m in the mix to win the tournament, so I’m just going to concentrate on that and the result will take care of itself,” Calvert said.

The ANC reigning champion is excited to play in Sydney and at venues he has never visited before. Although there will be several athletes he will face for the first time, some more familiar opponents are bound to challenge his title defence.

“I’ve played Bryan Lim in the finals of three Professional Squash Association tournaments this year and they’ve been brutal matches. I’ve learnt a lot and I am looking forward to competing against him again,” Calvert said.

Although he is focused on playing his best squash at the tournament, Calvert is also looking forward to being a part of the ANC atmosphere again.

“It is always a pleasure to compete in the ANC. My favourite thing is being able to compete against the best players in Australia and play high quality squash,” he said.
