Lamb, Ma & Boswell taste Oceania glory

Emmy Lamb and James Boswell have backed up their Australian Junior Open efforts with their second titles in less than a week, claiming the 2025 Oceania Junior Championships (OJC) in Hamilton, New Zealand.

Nathan Lin and Tina Ma ensured Australia took home four titles, with Ma winning the Girls U17 final after claiming the U15 title twelve months ago.

The Boys U19 Final was highly-anticipated as the top two seeds went head-to-head in a rematch of last week’s Australian Junior Open (AJO) Final.

Like last Thursday’s match, Thomas Scott (NSW) claimed the first game before top seed Oliver Dunbar (NZL) levelled up the Final.

While Thomas was able to go up 2-1 last week, Dunbar maintained the ascendency in the third by conceding just four points. While the fourth game went the distance, Dunbar was able to defend the 2024 title he claimed in Melbourne.

In the U19 Girls Final, Emmy Lamb (NSW) continued her strong run of form to win her second title in less than a week.

Seeded sixth, Lamb defeated third seed Hannah Slyth (WA) and second seed Ella Hill (NZL) to reach the final where she met New Zealand’s Maiden-Lee Coe.

Coe’s form was clear after taking down AJO runner-up Joanne Joseph (VIC) in the quarters and coming from 0-2 down to defeat top seed Sarbani Maitra (QLD) in the semis.

However the Kiwi could never maintain momentum for the periods required to overcome an in-form Lamb who took the final 3-

Tina Ma (VIC) is undefeated at the OJC for the past two years after defeating Queensland’s Lilly Wilson in the Girls U17 Final.

Ma defeated Brooke Valois (NZL) in the U15 Final last year, however Wilson accounted for the Kiwi over five games in the semis to make the decider.

Like Wilson, Ma needed to come from 1-2 down in her semi, conceding just two points in the final two games for a 3-2 victory over Amalia Ricketts (NZL).

In the final, Ma led 2-1 before Wilson edged back by taking the third game, however the Victoria regained the ascendency to claim victory.

Stanley Chung (NSW) put up a brave fight but was unable to overcome New Zealand’s Maximus Mathews in the Boys U17 Final.

Chung caused one of the upsets of the tournament by defeating 2024 champion and top seed Brodie Bennett (NZL) in a five-game semi-final, however Mathews wasn’t to be denied, claiming the title without dropping a game throughout the tournament.

Queensland’s James Boswell won his first major event last week in Melbourne and added the OJC crown following his U15 Boys Final victory.

Boswell once again faced Victoria’s Kaveen Kohombange in the decider, however this clash was far tougher than last Thursday’s.

The second seed twice came back from a game to bring the final back on even terms, but Boswell showed great resilience to claim the title.

Emily Senior (JPN) has claimed five Australian and Oceania titles in the last three years following her victory in Hamilton.

The top seed headed down under having won the U13 AJO in 2023 and 2024 as well as last year’s OJC, and in the space of five days added the U15 AJO and OJC titles to her resume, defeating South Australia’s Olivia van Zon in Monday’s decider in Hamilton.

Elizabeth Wang (NSW) made it all the way to the Girls Under 13 Final where she put up a spirited performance.

Wang twice trailed Animaia Payne (NZL) but levelled the match on both occasions before the top seed prevailed in five games.

In the boys final, Levi Casey defeated Shawn Hu in the only final contested by two local players.

Nathan Lin (NSW) was knocked out of the AJO in the semi-finals last week but came back in Hamilton to defeat Nikos Michalakis (NZL) in the final.

The Girls U11 Final was an all-Kiwi affair with Shelby Duncan defeating Mila Gregory.
