Juniors shine at ACT Squash Open

Over 40 players aged 11 to 19 came together at the Woden Squash Centre over the weekend for the 2022 ACT Junior Squash Open.

With players travelling from NSW and Victoria to compete at the event, it was an action-packed weekend for the up-and-coming players.

Coming up from Victoria for the event, Harvey Allen won the boy’s U19 event after defeating ACT local Harry Burgess 3-0 (11-9, 11-2, 11-7). Allen headed into the event as the number one seed and didn’t drop a game on his journey to the gold medal.

The girl's U19/U17s competition was a tough round-robin draw. The gold medal game was a rematch of the round 3 matchup between Victoria’s Amelie Guziak and ACT’s Kaitlyn O’Neill.

While their first meeting was a clear victory for Guziak (11-7, 11-5, 11-4), the gold-medal match proved to be more challenging for both players. The undefeated Guziak eventually got the upperhand, securing the gold 3-1 (9-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-8).

Henry Kross was a stand out performer over the weekend, winning gold in both the boys U15 and U13/U11 events. The player from Parkes Services Squash Club defeated fellow NSW player Connor Haberecht 3-0 in the final.

Kross had a tough semi-final match against Ethan Middleton, in order to reach the U15 final, coming away with a 3-2 win. Haberecht defeated local ACT player Denver Field in the other semi-final 3-2, battling it out for 37 minutes to qualify for the final.

Kross also defeated Oliver Dickenson in straight games (11-2, 11-3, 11-8) in the U13/U11s final to bring home two gold medals.

In the U17 boy’s, Victorian Patrick O’Shannessy was pushed to the limit in five games by Marcus Wang from NSW. After a tough four-set battle against Jackson Wylie on his way to the final, O’Shannessy had to dig deep to claim the title 4-1 (11-13, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6).

Victorian Amelia Brigden won gold in the girls U15/13, defeating Elizabeth Wang from NSW in the final 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 11-6).
