Facility Highlight: WA State Squash Centre

Belmont Squash Centre was opened by the Wheatley family on 17 May 1973 when the Australian Squash Championships saw the official opening of the Centre.

Located less than 15 minutes from Perth’s CBD, Belmont quickly established itself as one of the leading centres in WA

Despite the Centre being an integral part of the Belmont sporting community for nearly half a century, there was the real threat a few years ago that it may disappear. The club rallied together and after seeking help from WA Squash, managed to convince the State Government to purchase the complex to create what is now known as the WA State Squash Centre.

The Government has invested significant funds into this project to ensure it remains a facility the squash community of WA can be proud of.

Having been built in the early 1970s, and with no major renovations taking place since, the works currently underway are certainly overdue.

To date, a significant amount of work has been done, including new carpets, lighting, paint, installation of two glass backs, and much more is yet to come before the works are expected to be completed late this year.

Belmont has hosted some of the biggest tournaments in the country, and in addition to hosting last year’s WA Open and WA Junior State Championships, the Centre also played host to the 2022 UniSport Nationals.

There are currently almost 700 regular users of the courts at Belmont, almost 200 of which are Club members. The club has a strong juniors presence with the 2022 Australian No.1 under 17 boy Daniel Marsh and current No.3 under 11 girl Teagan Scott both from Belmont.

The club boasts players aged as young as seven through to over 75.
