Donna Lobban’s Allam British Open campaign continues

Published Tue 17 Aug 2021

Donna Lobban is through to round three of the Allam British Open after defeating Egypt’s Mariam Metwally in a gripping five-game match: 11-9, 9-11, 2-11, 11-6, 11-8.

Lobban said she was happy and relieved to have emerged the winner after a fiercely contested battle which went on for over an hour.

“I knew it was a match that I could win if I put the right game together today. She’s a really tricky opponent and the match was so up and down,” Lobban said.

Lobban commended the skill of her opponent saying that Metwally is a player who can easily get you in trouble if you aren’t playing the right tactics.

“In the end I had to be smart and patient and pick the right times to go for it. I think the difference was me being steady and sticking to my game plan.

“I learnt more when I was losing, especially in that third game. Once I refocused and got her moving again the points started coming my way. It was one of those matches that were night and day, when you get it right it’s easy, when you get it wrong it’s easy to be losing,” she said.

In the third round Lobban will face World no.6 Sarah-Jane Perry of England, with the match scheduled on Thursday 19 August 2021 at 9pm AEST.
