Squash Australia is pleased to announce City Tattersalls Group has once again come on board to sponsor a feature event on the international calendar.
The 2023 City Tattersalls Group Australian Open will be played from 8 to 12 November in Sydney and is set to see our domestic stars once again take on the world’s best.
In an added boost, the tournament has been elevated from the PSA Challenger tour to become a PSA World Tour event for the first time in over 10 years.
The 2023 event will be a PSA World Tour Bronze, which not only brings about an increase in the prizemoney on offer at the tournament, but also the quality of competition with more of the world’s best certain to head to Sydney.
“We’re excited that City Tattersalls Group have once again partnered with Squash Australia as naming rights sponsor of the tournament,” said Robert Donaghue, Squash Australia CEO. “The event was a fantastic success last year and having the ongoing support of City Tatts will ensure we can continue to showcase Squash at the highest level.
“This is the most storied event in Australian squash with an honour roll dating back to the 1920s. From the amateur to the professional era, all of our sport’s biggest names have made their mark at the Australian Open.”
Donaghue said that while the elevation to PSA World Tour Bronze status is a shot in the arm for the tournament, Squash Australia is determined to grow the event even more while still offering opportunities to bring all levels of the sport together.
“Going from PSA Challenger to PSA World Tour Bronze is fantastic, and we are committed to seeing the City Group Australian Open become a Platinum level event in the years to come and I’m confident we have the right plan and we’re on the path to get there,” said Donaghue.
“With the Commonwealth Games in Victoria in 2026, playing elite squash tournaments in this country is really important.
“The Australian Open is unique in that the best in the world get to play alongside players of all levels in the graded competition, showcasing the pathway from participation levels through to the top of the sport.”
City Tattersalls Group CEO Marcelo Veloz said the Club and members are incredibly proud to be naming rights partner of the 2023 Australian Squash Open once again this year.
“The Open will not only continue to help grow the sport nationally, but it will no doubt put Sydney up in lights on the world stage, attracting some of the best talent to the greatest city in the world,” said Veloz.
“Squash is an important part of Club life for us here at City Tatts, not only because of the juniors program we run out of our Castlereagh Club involving nearly 50 kids under 18 years of age, but because of the great and long-lasting relationship that exists between our Castlereagh Club and the Sydney CBD squash competition.”
