Australian Junior players set to compete at prestige British Junior Open
Published Tue 03 Jan 2023
Travelling as part of the Squash Australia tour group, 23 junior Australian athletes are set to compete at the British Junior Open from today till the eighth of January 2023 in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
The group will be led by National Coach Stewart Boswell, and supported by coaches Cassie Thomas, Vicky Boswell and Commonwealth Games gold medalist Donna Lobban and Vicky Boswell.
The British Junior Open provides an excellent opportunity for the Australian juniors to be exposed to high level competition, in the lead up to the 2023 World Junior Championships in Australia from 18-29 July 2023.
Among the 23 Aussie athletes set to compete is Oceania Junior champion Oscar Curtis, and rising stars Madison Lyon, and Erin Classen.
For the majority of the 23-person team, this will be their first British Junior Open experience, an opportunity which National Coach Boswell said is both exciting and integral to the development of the next generation.
“The British Junior Open is one of the premier international junior events, consisting of age categories Under 11 through to Under 19,” said Boswell.
“With the exception of the Under 19 World Junior Individual Championships, the British Junior Open is widely considered the most prestigious and strongest junior event in the world, with a history dating back many decades.”
“Australia has 23 juniors competing this year, which is our largest contingent ever to take part in the event. The 2023 edition of the British Junior Open will be the first time the event has been held since 2020 due to COVID and is a fantastic opportunity for the Australian players to test themselves against the world’s best juniors.”
