Australian Doubles Open gets underway this weekend

The first national event of 2022 will begin this weekend (22-23 January) as the Australian Doubles Open takes place at Carrara Squash Centre.
The two-day tournament will see the Australian squash community reunited after travel restrictions and lockdowns over the past two years saw competitions decimated. It will also be a significant milestone on the road to Birmingham 2022 with players looking towards selection for Australia’s Commonwealth Games Team.
The Australian Doubles Open marks the first of three squash events on Queensland’s Gold Coast with the 2022 Gold Coast PSA Open (28-30 January) and 2022 Carrara Junior Open (30 January) being held the following weekend.
With the release of the draw earlier this week, there are set to be some tantalising matches on the cards with eight-time Commonwealth Games medallist Rachael Grinham looking to defend her 2021 titles in both the mixed open and women’s open as she partners with Rhys Dowling, who won the men’s double’s title last year and Alex Haydon respectively.
Grinham and Dowling face stiff competition from no.1 seeds and 2018 Commonwealth Games representatives Sarah Cardwell and Rex Hedrick in the mixed open.
The women’s open and mixed open are both round-robin formats. The top team from each group in the mixed open will qualify for the semi-finals while the women’s open sees the top two advance to the semi-finals commencing from 10am Sunday.
Over in the men’s open, Dowling and Hedrick will pair up as the top seeds for the event. The duo were both selected on Australia’s squad for the WSF Men's World Team Squash Championship that was unfortunately cancelled at the last minute in November last year.
With a knockout draw in place, every match is do-or-die for the teams to advance to the semi-finals to begin from 10:30am Sunday.
The Australian Doubles Open also features A Graded, B Graded and C Graded Combined Doubles events.
