Australia to face team USA in first pool match at the Women's World Team Championships

The WSF Women’s World Team Championships are about to get underway tomorrow Saturday 10 December in Cairo, Egypt, where four days of pool matches will determine the eight teams who will advance to the knock-out rounds.

The official draw divided the seventeen participating countries in four groups, with pool D made up of five teams.

Australia has been placed in pool B alongside team USA, Scotland and Germany. Donna Lobban, Sarah Cardwell, Jess Turnbull and Alex Haydon will face team USA in their first match, scheduled at 7.30pm local time (Sunday 11 December, 4.30am AEDT).

It will be a really tough test first up for the Aussies, as team USA is considered one of the favourites for the title together with Egypt and England, presenting what is arguably the strongest American team ever assembled.

All four American representatives are currently in the top 20 of the Women's PSA World Squash ranking, led by world no.4 Amanda Sobhy and world no. 10 Olivia Fiechter. Amanda's sister and recent Australian Open runner-up Sabrina Sobhy is ranked no. 15 in the world, while Oliva Clyne is no.20.

After their debut against the U.S., the Aussie team will have a rest day before taking on 8th seed Scotland on Tuesday at 2.30am AEDT. Australia's last pool match is scheduled for Wednesday at 4.30am AEDT against Germany.

Each contest is played out in a best-of-three-match format, with the top two teams in each pool advancing to the quarterfinals, while the remaining teams will continue playing for places from 9th to 17th. All the action from the Madinaty Sports Club's two glass courts will be streamed live and free on WorldSquash.TV, the World Squash Federation's new streaming platform.

  • Monday, 12 December, 5.30pm local: Australia v Scotland (Tuesday, 2.30am AEDT)
