Australia take early Trans Tasman lead

Published Mon 15 Apr 2024

Australia has taken the lead on day one of the 2024 Junior Trans Tasman Test Series at Melbourne Sports Centres.

Keen to win back the title they surrendered away from home in December, Australia came out firing on Monday, winning six of the first eight matches to set the tone.

Australia holds a 10-6 advantage heading into day two, and the margin could have been wider were it not for Jonty Collier and Freddie Jameson edging out William Slade and Daniel Marsh in five-game results.

Marcus Wang produced the upset of the day in a three-game takedown of Oceania U17 champion Brodie Bennett, while Sarbani Maitra was equally impressive in her victory over AJO and OJC U17 top seed Erin Wyllie.

Australia's stars of the future were the backbone of today's win, with all eight Under 17 and Under 15 matches going Australia's way.
