Australia defeated by Scotland in close match at Women's World Team Championships
Published Tue 13 Dec 2022
Despite a valiant effort, Australia was defeated 2-1 by Scotland in their second pool match at the 2022 WSF Women's World Team Championships in Cairo overnight.
The first match between Alex Haydon and Alison Thomson was extremely close, particularly in the second game when Haydon was up 4-0 and again 7-5 before a strong comeback by the Scottish secured the game. Haydon pushed hard, but couldn't quite convert, going down in a tight 3-game match.
Donna Lobban picked up the first win for Australia in the second match, however not in the fashion anyone had hoped for. Her opponent Lisa Aitken was forced to retire in the third game due to what looked like a serious knee injury, giving the point to the Aussies.
Jessica Turnbull was next up for Australia in the decisive match against Georgia Adderley. The Scottish started strong taking the opening two games quite quickly, before holding off a comeback from the Aussie national champion to take a close third game 11-9 and the match.
"It was a committed effort from all of the team tonight, however the Scots were too strong," admitted National Coach Stewart Boswell at the end of the contest.
The Aussies will return to the court later tonight (4.30am on Wednesday in Australia) to take on Germany in their last pool match.
