Athletes descend on Victory Squash for the 2021 Gympie PSA Satellite

The  2021 Gympie PSA Satellite has arrived at Victory Squash, Gympie and will run through to Sunday 28 March with professional squash players from across the country taking part as well as more players competing in a local event run simultaneously.

This is the first Gympie PSA Satellite event created to benefit players looking to get a head start on the PSA Tour which has now resumed since a COVID enforced break last year.

The event welcomes some of the best PSA players in Australia including former world number one Rachael Grinham and Commonwealth Games representatives Tamika Hunt and Sarah Cardwell as well as top ranked Aussies Jessica Turnbull, Joseph White, Nicholas Calvert, and Thomas Calvert and many more.

With limited international competitions currently due to COVID, Squash Australia has remained committed to delivering quality domestic competitions as athletes continue to prepare for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, which are just under 500 days away.

Squash Australia CEO Robert Donaghue is delighted to be working with Gympie Regional Council to deliver this event.

“Squash Australia is looking forward to working with Gympie Regional Council to deliver the first Gympie PSA Satellite event,” Mr Donaghue says.

“The event will bring some of Australia's top talent to the area and help to build awareness for Squash in the region.”

“Providing quality competitions for our domestic based athletes is very important and we are pleased to work with the Gympie Council who have great facilities and are helping us to deliver events in a COVID safe way,” he said.

The first night of the event showed the locals some entertaining squash with the highlight being the unseeded 18 year old James Lloyd who upset the 6th seed David Turner. The match was a topsy-turvy affair with the lead changing several times throughout the 54 minute duration. In the end Lloyd finished better taking the match 11-8, 10-12, 6-11, 11-8, 11-3 (54 min).

The top seeds will take to the court for quarter final action tomorrow starting from 5.30pm AEST Friday.

The event is taking place at Victory Squash, Gympie and entry is free to patrons who wish to come and watch the action.
