Squash Australia is excited to announce the 2022 Australian Junior Championships is headed to SquashWorld Mirrabooka in Western Australia from 27 September to 2 October.
Attracting players from across Australia, the blue ribbon event on Squash Australia’s calendar will be played at the largest squash centre in the country with 14 glass back courts.
Following the cancellation of the 2021 Australian Junior Championships due to COVID-19 lockdowns, this year’s event is set to be bigger than ever.
It will also follow on from a successful Australian Junior Open in Bendigo earlier this year that saw over 160 players from across Australia descend on the regional Victorian city for four days of competition.
Squash Australia’s Chief Executive Officer said it was exciting to see the return of the Australian Junior Championships after a one-year absence.
“We’re looking forward to bringing the Australian Junior Championships to Western Australia and seeing the junior squash community from all over Australia come together for the event after last year’s cancellation,” he said.
“We hope to see many young squash players at Mirrabooka and we would like to thank Squash WA and the City of Stirling Council for their support in bringing the event back to West for the first time since 2014.”
The highly anticipated teams event also returns to the event for the first time in three years and will see states and territories go head to head.
In 2019, Queensland took out the team event after beating Victoria by two points and will be looking to defend their title in Perth.
City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin said the City looked forward to hosting the championships in Mirrabooka, at one of the largest squash facilities in Australia.
“The City is thrilled to welcome the Australian Junior Squash Championships to Mirrabooka for the first time and we hope the Western Australian team can take the team title with the support of a home crowd,” he said.
“During this six-day competition, the event is expected to attract 200 players and their families and supporters, which will bring an exciting event and a significant economic benefit to our community, so we look forward to welcoming them with open arms.”
The Australian Junior Championships will have an individual event that will take place from 27-29 September before the team's event from 30 September to 2 October.
