hoto: The team of Rachael Grinham and Jordan Till came from behind to defeat Nathan Turnbull and Sarah Cardwell late on Day One.

First round action got underway today in the Australian Doubles Open at the National Squash Centre at Carrara. This event combines Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Open Doubles teams along with graded A and B/C combined grade teams.

The pool matches for Men’s and Mixed events were played out today with Semi-Finals starting tomorrow. The Women’s Open and two graded events are Round Robin draws and placings will be finalised following matches tomorrow. All seeded players made their way into the semi-finals with the surprise coming from newly formed pairing Thomas Calvert/Vicky Boswell. It all came down to the last match of the mixed main draw to determine the semi-finalists with Calvert/Boswell edging their way in.

The longest match of the day, at 41 minutes came from the combinations of Thomas Calvert/Vicky Boswell and Jessica Turnbull/Jason Van Der Walt. It was a tough match for the players seeing last weekend’s Australian Open Women’s Runner up taking to the court to fight for a spot in the semi-finals with her respective partner. It was a gripping match with with the duo Turnbull and Van Der Walt taking out the win with a final result of 6-11, 11-7, 11-9 (41 mins)

The closest match and second longest match of the day came in the Men’s Open Nathan Turnbull/Brad Freeme took to the court against Gold Coast locals Lachlan Coxsedge/Joel Luca. The locals put the pair through their paces but in the end the last year’s Men’s Open winners Turnbull/Freeme proved they were worthy for a semi-final spot taking the win, 11-8, 10-11, 11-9 (40 mins).
