Squash Australia is excited to announce the 2022 City Tattersalls Club Australian Open is headed to the University of Sydney, NSW, from 26 - 30 October 2022, with the top international and domestic players lining up in the new look event.
The City Tattersalls Club Australian Open is the pinnacle event on the Australian squash calendar with the 2022 event moving up in status to become a PSA Challenger 30 event.
Both the men’s number one seed, Miguel Rodriguez (Colombia), ranked 17 in the world and women’s number one seed Nele Gillis (Belgium) ranked 13 in the world, are expected to be amongst the headline stars at the University of Sydney next month.
Australia’s top ranked female player, Donna Lobban, will be the top seeded Australian, ranked #5 for her first time competing on home soil since the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Following his recent success at Australian PSA Challenger events, including his silver-medal winning performance at the Began Open last weekend, Rex Hedrick will be the top ranked Australian male, seeded 8th.
The event will not only see some of the world's best compete in the PSA Challenger, but will also offer graded competition and junior level events designed to bring the entire squash community together.
Squash Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Robert Donaghue, said the 2022 City Tattersalls Club Australian Open is on track to be one of the biggest on record with all levels of the sport providing the opportunity to take part in this world class event.
“The Australian Open has a long and proud history for our sport in Australia, and our goal is to provide opportunities for our every day and junior athletes to compete alongside the best in the world to create a true festival of Squash.
“By increasing our prize money to the highest level seen in the last 10 years, we have attracted even more world class talent in the PSA Challenger event to go head to head with our elite Aussie players.
“It’s all part of our commitment to return the event to the international Platinum level as we build towards Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games in Bendigo. We want to use the runway to another home Commonwealth Games to grow the profile of squash in Australia and attract the world’s best down under."
The event is proudly supported by the City Tattersalls Club.
