How to Become an Official

To become a referee you’ll need good observation, leadership, confidence, and communication skills to be able to manage a squash game. There are five levels for certification, which once achieved, is valid for two years. These certifications are skill- based and require specific competencies.

To start your journey and become a certified referee you will complete our online courses through the Squash Australia Learning Centre.

 

Stages of Being an Official

Squash Australia Officiating Certification is provided through a partnership between Squash Australia and World Squash Officiating.

Register to create a Squash Australia and World Squash Officiating profile. The Learning Centre will navigate you through each course level.

From Level 1 through to Level 5 Squash Australia certification fee is $15.00 and for WSO membership varies for each level.

Level 0 - FREE
Basic overview and introduction to the rules of squash for anyone wishing to have an entry level understanding when participating in squash events.

Level 1 - (SqA Certification Fee - AUD$15.00 plus WSO course fee USD$15.00)

Building confidence and knowledge introductory course for those wishing to enhance their play or build their basic officiating skills

Level 1 Referees will be able to officiate at Squash Australia Australian Junior Squash Tour – Silver and Bronze events, State events, State Pennant competitions, Interclub competitions, Club competitions, Graded events.

Level 2 - (SqA Certification Fee - AUD$15.00 plus WSO course fee USD$15.00)

Take your knowledge to the next level.

Level 2 Referees will be able to officiate at Squash Australia State Masters, State Opens, Masters, Australian Junior Squash Tour – Gold events, Uni Games, Pan Pacific Masters, Australian Club Championships, Australian Junior Open, Australian Junior Championships.

Level 3 - (SqA Certification Fee - AUD$15.00 plus WSO course fee USD$15.00)

Referee the best players in the country.

Further developing officiating skills to a national level by enhancing knowledge, understanding.

Level 3 Referees will be able to officiate at Oceania, PSA events, WSF Championships, Australian National Championships, Australian Open.

For each Level you will complete the WSO online modular coursework, periodic online testing, and supply appropriate appraisals. To complete each course level, you will be required to complete the Squash Australia integrity courses and provide a current Working with Children Check.

As you attend events you will work with more experienced referees and be able to progress through the pathway via practical appraisals and informal mentoring. Gaining a lot of experience is a key to becoming a very good referee.

The exciting pathway for referees is officiating at national and international events and at such events as Commonwealth Games.
